The Copperpod or Yellow Flame Tree (Peltophorum pterocarpum) is a fast-growing, semi-deciduous tree widely planted across India as the showy "Peela Gulmohar". In summer it bursts into upright clusters of fragrant golden-yellow flowers, followed by flat, coppery seed pods that give the tree its name. It is valued chiefly as a broad-crowned shade and avenue tree, its dense canopy cooling roadsides, parks and large gardens.

Beyond ornament it serves practical roles: the wood is used as fuel and for light construction, the bark yields a dye and tannin, and the leaf litter improves soil. It thrives in the warm plains and coastal belts of peninsular, central and northern India, tolerating poor soils, heat and moderate drought once established.

  • Family: Fabaceae (Caesalpinioideae)
  • Native region: Tropical Southeast Asia and northern Australia; long naturalised in India
  • Mature height: 15-25 m
  • Growth rate: Fast

The seeds have a hard coat and need pre-treatment: pour near-boiling water over them and soak overnight, or nick the coat, to break dormancy. Sow about 1-2 cm deep in well-drained nursery soil; germination usually follows in 1-2 weeks. Raise seedlings in bags and transplant to the field at the onset of the monsoon when they are 30-45 cm tall.
