Passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) is a vigorous evergreen climbing vine grown across India's warm, humid regions including the Western Ghats, north-east, and southern hills. It bears round purple or yellow fruit with intensely aromatic, tangy-sweet pulp packed with edible seeds. The vine climbs rapidly by tendrils and produces strikingly intricate purple-and-white flowers. Fast-growing and quick to bear, it can fruit within a year of planting on a sturdy trellis. The juice is hugely popular for drinks, desserts and squashes. Both an ornamental and a productive crop, it suits home gardens, terraces and small commercial plots.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water passion fruit?
Keep the soil evenly moist with regular watering, especially during flowering and fruiting; never let it waterlog or fully dry out.
How much sun does passion fruit need?
It needs full sun, at least 6 hours daily, for strong flowering and heavy fruiting.
Is passion fruit safe for pets?
Ripe fruit pulp is safe, but unripe fruit and foliage contain compounds that are mildly toxic, so keep pets from chewing the vine.
When should I repot a passion fruit vine?
Repot young container vines yearly into a larger pot; once on a trellis it is best planted in the ground.
How is passion fruit propagated?
It grows readily from fresh seed or from semi-hardwood stem cuttings; named types are usually grown from cuttings.
Why is my vine flowering but not fruiting?
Poor pollination is common; hand-pollinate flowers and ensure full sun, and avoid excess nitrogen that favours leaves over fruit.
When does passion fruit start bearing?
On a good trellis it can flower and fruit within 8-12 months of planting and crops over a long warm season.
Can passion fruit be grown on a terrace?
Yes, it grows excellently in a large pot with a sturdy trellis on a sunny terrace or balcony.
Are any parts of the plant toxic?
The ripe pulp is safe to eat, but unripe fruit and leaves contain mild cyanogenic compounds and should not be consumed.
What fertilizer is best for passion fruit?
Use a balanced NPK during growth and switch to a potassium-rich feed during flowering and fruiting for sweeter, heavier crops.
