Uses

Ripe fruit is eaten fresh, in juices, smoothies and salads, while raw green papaya is grated for sabzi, thoran and salads and is valued for digestion. The tree is a productive, space-saving choice for home orchards and large terrace containers.

Growing tips

Sow 2-3 seeds 1-1.5 cm deep per spot or pot, as germination can be slow; soaking seeds overnight speeds things up. Germination takes 15-30 days. Transplant or thin to the strongest seedling, spacing trees 2-2.5 m apart. Plant on raised mounds for drainage and keep several plants to ensure a fruiting female or bisexual tree. First fruit ripens about 8-12 months after sowing.
