Ananas comosus grown as an ornamental is a striking bromeliad forming a rosette of long, arching, sword-shaped leaves, often edged with small spines or brightened with cream and pink variegation. At maturity it sends up a colourful flower spike that develops into a small, decorative pineapple crowned with a leafy tuft. Dwarf ornamental forms are popular as eye-catching potted novelties for patios, balconies and bright interiors. It loves warmth and full to bright light, tolerates drought well, and is well-suited to India's tropical and subtropical climate.

Frequently asked questions

How do I water an ornamental pineapple?
Water when the top of the soil dries out; it tolerates short dry spells. Keep it on the drier side rather than soggy to avoid root rot.
How much light does it need?
It loves full to very bright light, which intensifies leaf colour and encourages flowering and fruiting. Indoors give it the brightest spot available.
Is the fruit edible?
Ornamental forms produce a small pineapple that is technically edible but mainly decorative. The unripe fruit and sap can irritate, so it is grown for show.
Is it safe for pets?
The plant is generally non-toxic, but the spiny leaf edges can scratch and the unripe fruit sap may irritate, so keep curious pets at a distance.
How do I propagate it?
Twist or cut off the leafy crown from a fruit, let it dry a day, then root it in soil. You can also pot up offsets or suckers from the base.
When should I repot it?
Repot when it becomes pot-bound, choosing a deep, sturdy container with free-draining soil to support the heavy rosette.
How long until it fruits?
A healthy plant may flower and set its small ornamental fruit after about a year or more of strong growth in bright light and warmth.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, in a very bright spot, though it grows and fruits best outdoors in full sun in India's warm climate.
Why are the leaves not colourful?
Dull foliage usually means insufficient light. Move it to a sunnier position to bring out the pink, red and cream tones in variegated types.
How often should I fertilize?
Feed with a balanced fertilizer about once a month during the growing season to support strong leaves and fruiting.
