Care guide

Sunlight Full sun (6+ hours)

Soil / mix Rich, well-drained loam with plenty of compost

Uses

Dried multicoloured cobs are used for festive and rustic home decoration, wreaths and centrepieces. Stalks make good green fodder or compost material, and some strains double as popcorn.

Growing tips

Sow seeds 2-3 cm deep, spacing plants 25-30 cm apart in blocks of several short rows rather than a single line to ensure good wind pollination. Germination takes 7-14 days in warm soil. Hill up soil around the base as plants grow for support. Cobs are ready in about 90-110 days; leave them on the plant until husks dry, then harvest and air-dry indoors for decor.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow ornamental corn in India?
Sow after the cold passes, from February-March in the plains and again with the monsoon (June-July). Warm soil above 18°C gives the best germination.
Can I grow ornamental corn in pots on a terrace?
Yes, use large 15-20 litre grow-bags with rich soil and group several together for pollination, though open ground or raised beds give taller, better-filled cobs.
