Orange Jasmine (Murraya paniculata), known as Kamini, is a popular evergreen shrub or small tree grown for its clusters of small, intensely jasmine-scented white flowers and lush glossy foliage. Native to South and Southeast Asia, it blooms in repeated flushes through the warm months, often after rain, and produces small red berries. The dense, fine-textured leaves make it a superb hedge and topiary plant, while its neat habit suits containers and bonsai. Easy to grow across India's tropical and subtropical regions, Kamini is loved for perfuming gardens and attracting bees and birds.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Orange Jasmine?
Keep the soil evenly moist, watering when the top few centimetres dry. Water more in summer and reduce in winter, avoiding waterlogging.
How much sunlight does Kamini need?
It grows well in full sun to partial shade. More sun gives denser growth and more of its strongly scented flowers.
Is Orange Jasmine safe for pets?
It is considered mildly toxic if eaten and the berries are not edible, so keep curious pets and children from chewing on it.
When should I repot it?
Repot every one to two years, or yearly for bonsai, in spring using fresh well-drained soil and a slightly larger pot.
How do I propagate Kamini?
Propagate from fresh seeds or semi-hardwood cuttings taken in the warm season. Keep cuttings humid and shaded until roots form.
Why is my plant not flowering?
Too much shade, lack of nutrients or heavy pruning at the wrong time reduce flowers. Give it sun, feed regularly and let it settle after pruning.
When does it bloom?
It blooms in repeated flushes through the warm months, often bursting into flower a few days after rain or deep watering.
Can I grow it as a bonsai?
Yes. Its small leaves, fine branching and tolerance of pruning make Kamini a classic, rewarding bonsai subject.
Can I use it as a hedge?
Absolutely. It responds well to clipping, forms a dense screen and is one of the most popular fragrant hedge plants in India.
What fertiliser should I use?
Feed a balanced NPK fertiliser monthly in the growing season, with occasional compost or micronutrients to keep foliage glossy and green.
