Growing tips

<p>Sow seeds 1 cm deep in a seed tray or bed; germination takes <strong>7-14 days</strong>. Transplant seedlings 10-12 cm apart when pencil-thick (about 6-8 weeks old). Harvest spring onions any time; mature bulbs are ready in <strong>120-150 days</strong> when tops yellow and fall over. Cure pulled bulbs in shade before storing.</p>

When should I sow onion seeds in India?
Sow from October to December in most plains for the main rabi crop. Onions are cool-season and need short days while growing, then warmth to form bulbs by spring.
Can I grow onions in containers?
Yes, use a grow-bag or pot at least 20-25 cm deep with loose, well-drained soil. You will get good spring onions and decent bulbs if you space and feed them well.
