Uses

Mature bulbs are essential for everyday Indian cooking, curries, salads and chutneys; young plants pull as spring onions for stir-fries and garnishes.

Growing tips

Sow seeds 1 cm deep in a seed tray or bed; germination takes 7-14 days. Transplant seedlings 10-12 cm apart when pencil-thick (about 6-8 weeks old). Harvest spring onions any time; mature bulbs are ready in 120-150 days when tops yellow and fall over. Cure pulled bulbs in shade before storing.
