Uses

Tender pods are a staple in Indian cooking for sabzis, bharwa bhindi, sambhar and frying. Young pods are most flavourful and least fibrous when harvested small.

Growing tips

Soak seeds overnight, then direct sow 2 cm deep, spacing plants 30-45 cm apart. Germination takes 7-14 days in warm soil. No transplanting needed; okra dislikes root disturbance. First pods are ready in 50-65 days; harvest every 2-3 days when pods are 7-10 cm to keep plants productive.
