Mexican Feather Grass, Nassella tenuissima, is a fine-textured ornamental bunchgrass grown for its soft, hair-like green foliage and silky, arching flower plumes that shimmer and sway in the breeze. Native to Mexico, the south-western United States and Argentina, it is used in Indian gardens and landscape plantings for borders, gravel gardens, mass plantings and container displays where a soft, movement-filled texture is wanted. Once established it is notably drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, thriving in full sun on light, free-draining soils.

  • Family: Poaceae
  • Native region: Mexico, south-western USA and Argentina
  • Mature height: 0.4–0.7 m
  • Growth rate: Moderate to fast

The tiny seeds need light to germinate, so no pre-treatment is required. Surface-sow them onto a moist, well-drained seed mix and press them gently into the surface without covering, keeping the tray in a bright, warm spot. Germination usually takes around two to three weeks; once seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into small pots and grow on before planting into well-drained beds in full sun.
