Mussaenda erythrophylla, the red flag bush, is a tropical evergreen shrub grown for its spectacular display of enlarged, petal-like bracts in glowing red or pink that surround small star-shaped flowers. Native to West Africa, it thrives in the warm, humid parts of India, where it flowers abundantly through the warm and monsoon months. The velvety bracts hold colour for a long time, creating a near-continuous tropical show. It can be grown as a feature shrub, trained on a support, or kept in a large pot. Heat-loving and floriferous, Mussaenda brings bold, lasting colour to warm gardens.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Mussaenda?
Keep the soil evenly moist during the warm growing months, watering regularly, and reduce somewhat in the cool season.
How much light does it need?
It flowers best in full sun to partial shade; in very hot, dry areas some afternoon shade protects the soft foliage.
Is Mussaenda safe for pets?
No major toxicity has been reported, but it is still sensible to prevent pets from eating the leaves or bracts.
How do I propagate it?
Use semi-hardwood cuttings or air layering during the warm season, keeping them humid and shaded until they root.
When does it flower?
It flowers heavily through the warm and monsoon months, with the coloured bracts persisting for a long time.
When should I prune?
Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the plant and encourage strong new shoots that carry the next flush of bracts.
Can it be grown in a pot?
Yes, in a large container with rich soil; keep it warm, humid and well fed, and prune to maintain a compact shape.
Why isn't it flowering?
Insufficient warmth, light or feeding, or cold stress, can reduce flowering. Give full sun, monthly feeding and protect from cold.
What pests affect it?
Mealybugs, scale and whitefly may appear; rinse the foliage and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
Does it tolerate cold?
No, it is frost sensitive. In northern India protect it in winter or grow it where temperatures stay comfortably warm.
