The Moon Cactus is a colourful grafted novelty made by joining a colourful mutant Gymnocalycium mihanovichii top - lacking green chlorophyll - onto a green columnar rootstock such as Hylocereus that feeds it. The bright red, orange, yellow or pink crown contrasts vividly with the green base, making it a cheerful gift and desk plant. It needs the same gentle cactus care: bright indirect light, gritty soil and sparing water. Because the colourful top cannot photosynthesise, the graft's lifespan is limited, but with good care it stays vibrant for a long time and even produces small flowers.

Growing tips

In India keep Moon Cactus indoors in bright indirect light; direct afternoon sun fades the colour, and overwatering quickly rots the graft join.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water a Moon Cactus?
Water sparingly, only when the soil is fully dry, about every 10-14 days in warm weather and much less in winter, never letting it stay soggy.
How much light does it need?
Bright indirect light is ideal. Harsh direct sun can fade or scorch the colourful top, while too little light dulls it.
Is the Moon Cactus safe for pets?
Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though its small spines can prick, so keep it out of reach.
Why is my Moon Cactus dying or browning at the join?
Browning or softness at the graft union is usually rot from overwatering. Keep the join dry, improve drainage and water only when the soil is dry.
Can I propagate a Moon Cactus?
It is difficult because the colourful top cannot survive alone. You must graft its offsets onto a green rootstock to keep it going.
Why is the colourful top shrinking?
The coloured top can outgrow or weaken the rootstock over time. Ensure the green base is healthy and well-lit so it can feed the graft.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, it is an ideal indoor plant for a bright windowsill away from direct midday sun.
Does the Moon Cactus flower?
It can occasionally produce small pink or white flowers in spring or summer, but it is grown mainly for its colourful body.
How long does a Moon Cactus live?
Because the top cannot photosynthesise, its lifespan is limited, but with good light and careful watering it can last several years.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed a very dilute cactus fertilizer occasionally during summer only; over-fertilising can stress the graft.
