Ming Aralia (Polyscias scutellaria), often called Shield Aralia or Balfour Aralia, is a striking evergreen shrub with broad, rounded, scalloped leaves of glossy green, sometimes cream-margined. Its dense, upright form and bold foliage give a lush, tropical presence to interiors and shaded gardens. Slow-growing and long-lived, it develops attractive woody stems and is popular for bonsai and ornamental screening. It thrives in warmth, humidity and bright indirect light, making it well-suited to Indian homes when protected from cold. With steady care it becomes a handsome, sculptural accent for living rooms, lobbies and patios.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Ming Aralia?
Keep the soil lightly moist, watering when the top few centimetres dry. Avoid soggy roots and complete drying, both of which cause leaf drop.
How much light does it need?
Bright indirect light with gentle morning sun is ideal. Low light leads to leggy, sparse growth.
Is Ming Aralia safe for pets?
No, it is mildly toxic if ingested, so keep it out of reach of pets and small children.
When should I repot it?
Every 2-3 years. It prefers being slightly root-bound, so move it up only one pot size.
How do I propagate it?
Take stem cuttings during the warm months and root them in a moist, well-draining medium with high humidity.
Why is it dropping leaves?
Leaf drop usually follows cold drafts, sudden moves, overwatering or dry air. Keep it warm, humid and in a stable spot.
Does it flower indoors?
Rarely. It is grown for its foliage; small greenish flowers only appear on mature plants in ideal conditions.
Can it be used for bonsai?
Yes, its woody stems and bold leaves make it a popular bonsai subject that responds well to pruning.
Can I grow it outdoors?
Yes, in warm, shaded and humid spots away from cold. It is most commonly grown as an indoor plant.
How often should I fertilize?
Feed every 3-4 weeks with a balanced fertilizer in the growing season and reduce feeding in winter.
