Touch-me-not or Sensitive Plant, Mimosa pudica, is a low, sprawling leguminous herb famous for the way its feathery leaflets fold shut at the lightest touch and reopen minutes later. Originally from tropical America, it is now naturalised throughout India as a common weed of waste ground, lawns and roadsides, yet it is also raised deliberately as a curiosity for children and as a medicinal plant. In Ayurveda (Lajjalu) the root and whole plant are valued, and as a legume it fixes nitrogen and serves as a quick ground cover.

  • Family: Fabaceae
  • Native region: Tropical America (naturalised across India)
  • Mature height: 0.3–0.6 m (creeping)
  • Growth rate: Fast

The small seeds have a hard, water-resistant coat, so pre-treat them to break dormancy: pour hot water over the seeds and let them cool and soak overnight, or nick the coat lightly. Sow shallowly, barely covered with about 0.5 cm of soil, in warm conditions; germination usually follows in one to two weeks. Seedlings are easy to transplant or can be direct-sown where they are to grow, as the plant resents heavy root disturbance once established.
