Son Champa or Golden Champa, Michelia champaca, is an upright evergreen magnolia-relative famous for its richly perfumed orange-yellow flowers. Native to the Indian subcontinent and South-East Asia, it grows naturally in the Western Ghats and the eastern Himalayan foothills and is widely planted in gardens, temple courtyards and along avenues for its scent and shapely conical crown. The flowers are used in perfumery, garlands and worship, the bark and flowers have medicinal uses, and the moderately durable timber is worked into furniture and light construction.
- Family: Magnoliaceae
- Native region: Indian subcontinent and South-East Asia
- Mature height: 15–30 m
- Growth rate: Moderate
Champa seed is recalcitrant and short-lived, so sow it fresh. Clean off the fleshy red aril, soak the seeds for 24 hours, and sow about 1–2 cm deep in a moist, well-drained nursery mix kept in light shade. Germination typically takes three to four weeks and is uneven; keep the medium evenly moist and transplant seedlings into bags once they have a few true leaves, hardening them off before field planting at the onset of the rains.
