Echeveria elegans 'Mexican Snowball' is one of the most loved ornamental succulents, forming tidy rosettes of plump, pale blue-green leaves coated in a soft chalky bloom that often blushes pink at the tips in bright light. Native to Mexico, it grows about 8-12 cm across and offsets into clumps, making it ideal for pots, dish gardens and gifting. In spring it sends up arching stalks of pink-and-yellow bell flowers. It needs bright light, gritty soil and infrequent deep watering, thriving on sunny Indian balconies. Non-toxic and easy, it is a perfect beginner succulent.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Mexican Snowball?
Water deeply only when the soil is fully dry, roughly every 10-14 days in summer and far less in monsoon and winter. Empty any saucer afterward.
How much sun does it need?
It loves bright light with a few hours of direct sun for tight rosettes and pink tips. Give it some afternoon shade during the hottest Indian months.
Is it safe for pets?
Yes, Echeveria elegans is non-toxic to cats, dogs and humans, making it a safe choice for pet-friendly homes.
How do I propagate it?
Twist off a healthy leaf or remove an offset, let it callus for a day or two, then lay it on dry succulent mix and water lightly once roots appear.
Why is my echeveria stretching out?
Stretching with widely spaced leaves means it needs more light. Move it to a brighter, sunnier spot to restore the compact rosette shape.
Why did the lower leaves dry up?
It is normal for the oldest bottom leaves to dry and shed as the rosette grows. Simply remove them; widespread drying may mean underwatering.
Should I water over the leaves?
No, water at the soil level. Water sitting in the rosette can cause rot and washes off the protective chalky bloom on the leaves.
Can it grow indoors?
It grows best with strong light, so a very bright south-facing window is essential indoors; otherwise it stretches and loses colour.
When does it flower?
It produces arching stalks of pink-and-yellow bell-shaped flowers in spring to early summer when given enough light.
What fertilizer is best?
Feed with a diluted succulent fertilizer once or twice in spring; avoid frequent or strong feeding, which causes weak, leggy growth.
