African Marigold is a fast-growing, free-flowering annual famous for its large, rounded, pompom-like blooms in brilliant shades of yellow, orange and gold. Despite the name, it originates from Mexico and is now indispensable in Indian gardens and festivals. Its sturdy upright plants and aromatic, ferny foliage produce abundant blooms used heavily for garlands, temple offerings and decorations during Diwali, Dussehra and weddings. Easy and quick to grow from seed, it tolerates heat, attracts pollinators, and is often planted as a companion crop to repel certain pests, making it both ornamental and useful.

Frequently asked questions

How much sun does African Marigold need?
It needs full sun for the best growth and most abundant flowering; in shade it grows leggy and blooms poorly.
How often should I water marigolds?
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging and try not to wet the flowers, which can cause rot.
How do I get more flowers on my marigold?
Grow it in full sun, pinch the young plants for bushiness, deadhead spent blooms, and feed a potash-rich fertilizer at budding.
How do I grow marigold from seed?
Sow seeds in well-draining soil, keep lightly moist, and they germinate within about a week; seedlings flower in roughly 6–8 weeks.
Why should I deadhead marigolds?
Removing faded flowers prevents seed formation and channels energy into producing more new blooms, extending the flowering period.
Are marigolds toxic to pets?
African marigolds are generally considered non-toxic, though the strong-scented foliage may cause mild stomach upset if eaten in quantity.
When is the best time to grow marigold in India?
They flower best in the cool season; sow ahead of autumn and winter to have peak blooms for Diwali, Dussehra and the wedding season.
Why are my marigold leaves or buds rotting?
Excess moisture and humidity cause powdery mildew and bud rot. Improve air circulation, avoid overhead watering, and treat with neem or fungicide.
Can marigold help protect other plants?
Yes, marigolds are popular companion plants believed to repel certain nematodes and insects, so they are often planted among vegetables.
How tall does African Marigold grow?
It typically reaches about 45–90 cm depending on the variety, forming sturdy upright bushes topped with large blooms.
