The Chinese Fountain Palm (Livistona chinensis) is an elegant fan palm with large, glossy, deeply divided circular leaves whose drooping segment tips give it a graceful fountain-like appearance, carried on a stout single trunk. It is one of the most popular ornamental fan palms for warm gardens.

It is grown almost entirely for landscaping, as a specimen and avenue palm in gardens, parks, courtyards and large containers, and is tolerant of a range of conditions once established. In India it does well in warm, frost-free regions in sun to part shade on moist, well-drained soil, producing arching sprays of small flowers followed by blue-green fruits.

  • Family: Arecaceae
  • Native region: East Asia (southern China, Japan, Taiwan)
  • Mature height: 9-15 m
  • Growth rate: Slow to moderate

Clean the fleshy fruit fully from the seed and soak it in water for 2-3 days. Sow shallowly in a warm, humid seed tray of moist, free-draining mix and keep at 25-30 C; like most palms it is slow, germinating over 30 or more days. Transplant the seedlings into deep bags once they have one or two leaves.
