Uses

Lima beans are cooked as a vegetable, used in curries, stews and salads, and can be shelled fresh or dried; as a nitrogen-fixing legume the plant also improves garden soil.

Growing tips

Direct-sow seeds 2-3 cm deep, spacing bush types 15-20 cm apart and pole types 25-30 cm with a sturdy trellis. Germination takes 7-14 days in warm 22-30°C soil. Avoid overwatering at sowing to prevent rot. Harvest tender pods in about 65-75 days for bush types and 85-95 days for pole types, picking regularly to encourage more pods.
