Subabul (Leucaena leucocephala) is a fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing leguminous tree with feathery, mimosa-like foliage and creamy-white globular flower-heads followed by clusters of flat brown pods. It is one of the most widely planted multipurpose trees in the tropics for its speed and versatility.
It is grown for fuelwood and charcoal, pulpwood for paper, nutritious leaf fodder, green manure and live fencing, and as a soil-improving species in agroforestry and reclamation. The light timber is used for poles and small construction. It establishes readily across the plains of India and is so vigorous that it can become weedy; it tolerates drought and poor soils well once rooted.
- Family: Fabaceae (Mimosoideae)
- Native region: Central America (naturalised across India)
- Mature height: 7-18 m
- Growth rate: Very fast
The seed has a hard, water-resistant coat, so give it a hot-water treatment (pour near-boiling water over the seed and let it soak as the water cools overnight) or nick the coat before sowing. Sow about 1-2 cm deep directly into bags or a prepared bed; germination is quick, around 7-14 days. Plant out the young seedlings at the start of the rains.
