Uses

Lettuce leaves are eaten raw in salads, sandwiches, wraps and burgers, and the colourful loose-leaf types also add ornamental value to edible balcony gardens.

Growing tips

Sow seeds shallowly, about 0.5 cm deep, or surface-sow and press in lightly, as light aids germination. Sprouting takes 7-14 days at 15-22°C. Thin or transplant seedlings to 20-25 cm apart for heading types, closer for loose-leaf. Harvest baby leaves in 25-30 days and full heads or cut-and-come-again leaves in 45-60 days; pick outer leaves to keep plants producing.
