Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is a bushy perennial herb of the mint family, prized for its bright green, heart-shaped leaves that release a fresh lemony fragrance when touched. Long used in herbal medicine, its leaves make a calming tea said to ease stress, aid sleep and soothe digestion, and they add citrus notes to drinks, salads and desserts. The plant grows into a leafy mound with small white flowers loved by bees. Easy and vigorous, lemon balm grows well in pots and partly shaded spots, making it a fragrant, relaxing addition to Indian herb gardens and balconies.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water lemon balm?
Keep the soil consistently moist, watering whenever the surface dries. It needs more frequent watering in hot weather.
How much light does lemon balm need?
It grows in full sun to partial shade. In hot Indian climates, partial shade keeps the leaves lush and prevents scorching.
Is lemon balm safe for pets?
Lemon balm is generally considered non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs in small amounts.
When should I repot lemon balm?
Repot or divide every 1-2 years when it becomes crowded, ideally in spring, to keep it vigorous.
How do I propagate lemon balm?
Propagate easily by stem cuttings, root division, or seed; cuttings and division are fastest.
Why are my lemon balm leaves browning?
Browning often results from too much direct heat, dryness, or poor airflow. Move to shade and keep soil moist.
Does lemon balm flower?
Yes, it produces small white flowers in summer that attract bees. Trim flowers to keep leaf flavour strong.
Can lemon balm be grown indoors?
Yes, on a bright windowsill with good airflow, making it handy for fresh leaves near the kitchen.
Is lemon balm toxic to humans?
No, it is safe and widely consumed as a calming herbal tea and culinary flavouring.
How should I fertilize lemon balm?
Feed lightly once or twice a season with compost or balanced fertilizer; over-feeding weakens the lemon aroma.
