Uses

Lavender flowers are used in aromatherapy oils, potpourri, scented sachets, soaps and herbal teas, and the plant doubles as an ornamental, bee-attracting border that repels moths and some insects.

Growing tips

Chill seeds in the fridge for 3-4 weeks (cold stratification) before sowing for better germination. Surface-sow on fine, well-drained mix and press in lightly without burying, as light aids sprouting. Germination is slow and erratic, taking 2-4 weeks at 18-22°C. Transplant seedlings when they have 4-6 true leaves, spacing 30-45 cm apart. Plants usually flower from the second season, in late spring to summer.
