Uses

Grown as an ornamental for beds, borders and back-of-the-bed height, and widely used as a cut flower; the spikes also dry well for everlasting arrangements. The plant is toxic if eaten, so keep away from pets and children.

Growing tips

Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep directly where they are to bloom, as larkspur dislikes root disturbance; cover lightly since darkness aids germination. Seeds sprout in 14-21 days and prefer cool soil. Thin seedlings to 20-30 cm apart and stake taller varieties. Plants flower roughly 90-110 days after sowing through the cool winter months.
