Lantana (Lantana camara) is a tough, fast-growing flowering shrub famous for its rounded clusters of tiny flowers that often change colour as they age, creating a multicolour effect in yellow, orange, pink, red and white. Native to tropical America and naturalised widely in India, it blooms almost year-round and is a magnet for butterflies and bees. Extremely heat- and drought-tolerant, it thrives in full sun with little care and suits borders, hedges, hanging baskets and slopes. Note that it is invasive in many regions and its foliage and unripe berries are toxic to livestock and pets, so grow it responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Lantana?
Water moderately while establishing, then very sparingly as it is highly drought-tolerant. Let the soil dry between waterings to avoid root rot.
How much sunlight does it need?
Lantana needs full sun for the best flowering. In shade it grows leggy and produces far fewer flowers.
Is Lantana safe for pets?
No. The foliage and unripe green berries are toxic to pets and livestock if eaten, so keep animals and children away from it.
When should I repot it?
Repot container plants every one to two years in spring when root-bound, using well-drained potting soil and a larger pot.
How do I propagate Lantana?
It grows easily from softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings and from seed. Keep cuttings warm and lightly moist until rooted.
Why is my Lantana not flowering?
Too little sun, too much nitrogen or lack of pruning reduce blooms. Give it full sun, feed lightly and prune hard to trigger fresh flowering.
When does it bloom?
In warm climates it flowers almost year-round, with the heaviest bloom in the warm and sunny months.
Is Lantana invasive?
Yes, it is invasive in many regions of India. Grow it responsibly, prevent spread of berries, and prefer sterile, non-seeding cultivars.
Can I grow it in a pot?
Yes. It does well in pots and hanging baskets in full sun, where containment also helps limit its spread.
What fertiliser should I use?
Feed lightly with a balanced or low-nitrogen fertiliser; too much nitrogen produces lush leaves at the expense of flowers.
