Lagerstroemia speciosa, known as Pride of India or Jarul, is a handsome medium-to-large deciduous tree that bursts into large, crinkled panicles of pink-to-purple flowers during the hot and rainy season. It is one of India's finest flowering trees and a popular avenue and ornamental species.

Besides its landscape value in gardens, parks and roadsides, its strong, durable timber is used for boat-building, construction and agricultural implements, and its leaves (banaba) are well known in traditional medicine for anti-diabetic use. It grows naturally in moist regions of India including Assam, West Bengal, the Western Ghats and along streams, and prefers deep, moist, well-drained soils in full sun.

  • Family: Lythraceae
  • Native region: Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia
  • Mature height: 10-20 m
  • Growth rate: Moderate to fast

Collect the winged seed from the woody, splitting capsules. Soak it in water for about 24 hours, then surface-sow or lightly cover on a fine, moist seedbed or tray and keep warm and damp; germination takes around 14-21 days. Transplant the seedlings into bags once sturdy and plant out at the start of the monsoon.
