Lagerstroemia floribunda is a graceful small-to-medium deciduous crepe myrtle that produces large, frilly panicles of mauve-pink flowers through the hot season, followed by woody seed capsules. It is closely related to India's jarul and shares the same long, showy summer display.
It is grown chiefly as a flowering ornamental and avenue tree in gardens, parks and roadsides, and its straight, light wood is used locally for general construction. Native to mainland Southeast Asia, it is well suited to the warmer parts of India, thriving in full sun on moist but well-drained soils.
- Family: Lythraceae
- Native region: Southeast Asia (Thailand, Myanmar, Indochina)
- Mature height: 5-15 m
- Growth rate: Moderate
Collect the small, winged seed from mature, splitting capsules. It needs no heavy pre-treatment; surface-sow or barely cover it on a fine, moist seedbed or tray in warmth, keeping it lightly damp. Germination takes about 14-21 days. Prick out the seedlings into bags once they are large enough to handle and grow on before planting out in the rains.
