Krishna Tulsi or black holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum, syn. Ocimum sanctum) is a sacred aromatic herb forming a small, bushy subshrub with purple-tinged stems and leaves and spikes of tiny mauve flowers. It is the dark-leaved form of the revered Indian Tulsi, prized for its stronger, clove-like fragrance.
It is grown in homes, courtyards, temples and gardens across India for its central role in Ayurvedic medicine, where it is used for immunity, respiratory health and stress relief, and as an aromatic and natural insect-repellent plant. It thrives in warm conditions and full sun in pots or open ground and is easy to raise from seed.
- Family: Lamiaceae
- Native region: Indian subcontinent
- Mature height: 0.3-0.9 m
- Growth rate: Fast
The seed is very small, so surface-sow or barely cover it on a fine, moist seedbed or tray and press gently; do not bury deeply. Keep warm (25-30 C) and lightly moist; germination takes about 7-14 days. Thin or prick out the seedlings and transplant at the 4-5 leaf stage into pots or beds in full sun.
