The King Palm or Alexander Palm (Archontophoenix alexandrae) is an elegant, fast-establishing feather palm with a slender, smooth grey trunk topped by a neat crown of arching, glossy green fronds with silvery undersides and a distinct green crownshaft. It is one of the most popular landscape palms for a clean, tropical look.
It is grown purely as an ornamental and avenue palm in gardens, resorts, campuses and along driveways, often planted in groups for a layered canopy effect. In India it does best in humid, frost-free regions with rich, moist, well-drained soil and protection from strong dry winds. Mature palms carry sprays of cream flowers followed by bright red fruits.
- Family: Arecaceae
- Native region: Northeastern Australia
- Mature height: 15-25 m
- Growth rate: Moderate
Clean the red, fleshy fruit fully from the seed and soak it in water for 2-3 days. Sow shallowly in a warm, humid seed tray of moist, free-draining mix and keep at 25-30 C; palm seed is slow, germinating over 30 or more days (often several months). Transplant into bags once the seedlings have one or two leaves.
