Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, known as Flaming Katy, is a popular flowering succulent prized for its long-lasting clusters of tiny four-petalled blooms in red, pink, orange, yellow and white. Native to Madagascar, it carries thick, scalloped, glossy green leaves that store water and give it good drought tolerance. Compact and tidy, it flowers profusely for weeks, especially in cooler months, making it a favourite gift and festive plant. It is equally at home on a bright windowsill, balcony or as a colourful bedding accent. Easy to grow, it rewards minimal watering and good light with months of vivid colour in Indian homes.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Kalanchoe?
Water only when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, about weekly in summer and much less in monsoon and winter. Avoid waterlogging.
How much light does it need to flower?
Bright light with several hours of direct sun encourages abundant blooms; in low light it grows leggy and flowers poorly.
Is Kalanchoe safe for pets?
No, it is toxic to cats and dogs and can cause vomiting and, rarely, heart issues. Keep it out of reach of pets and children.
How do I get it to rebloom?
After flowering, trim spent blooms, then give it about six weeks of long nights (14 hours of darkness) with cooler temperatures to set new buds.
How do I propagate it?
Take a stem or leaf cutting, let it callus for a day or two, then plant in gritty, fast-draining mix and water lightly until rooted.
Why are the leaves dropping or turning yellow?
Usually overwatering or poor drainage; let the soil dry more between waterings and ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, near a bright sunny window. Indoors it needs the brightest spot available to keep blooming and stay compact.
When does it bloom?
It flowers mainly in the cooler months from winter into spring, and blooms can last several weeks.
Should I deadhead the flowers?
Yes, removing faded flower clusters keeps the plant tidy and encourages more blooms and bushier growth.
What fertilizer is best?
A balanced or bloom-boosting fertilizer once a month during active growth and budding; stop feeding while it rests.
