Kagji Nimboo, the thin-skinned Indian acid lime (Citrus aurantifolia), is a small, thorny evergreen tree or large shrub prized for its intensely sour, aromatic fruit. It is one of the most widely grown citrus in India, valued for juice, sherbet, pickles and everyday culinary use.

Beyond the kitchen it serves as a hardy seedling rootstock, a fragrant dooryard ornamental, and a source of traditional medicinal remedies from its fruit and leaves. It is cultivated across the warmer plains of India, with major production in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, favouring well-drained soils and frost-free climates.

  • Family: Rutaceae
  • Native region: Indo-Malayan / Southeast Asia
  • Mature height: 3-6 m
  • Growth rate: Moderate

Citrus seed is recalcitrant, so extract fresh seed from ripe fruit, wash off all pulp and sow without drying. Soak the cleaned seed in water for 12-24 hours, sow about 1-2 cm deep in a tray of light, well-drained mix, and keep warm and moist; germination takes roughly 21-30 days. Transplant the seedlings into bags at the 4-6 leaf stage; note that named varieties are usually budded onto such seedling stock.
