Kadamba (Anthocephalus cadamba, now also placed as Neolamarckia cadamba) is a large, fast-growing deciduous tree celebrated for its dense, spreading crown and its globular, orange, sweetly fragrant flower-heads that bloom through the monsoon. It is a sacred tree in Indian tradition, closely associated with Lord Krishna, and is widely planted as an avenue and shade tree as well as a plantation species.

Its pale, light timber is valued for plywood, pulp and paper, packing cases and light furniture, and its rapid growth makes it a leading choice for agroforestry and reforestation. In India it occurs naturally in moist deciduous forests and along plains and riverbanks from the sub-Himalayan tract through central and southern India, and thrives in warm, humid, well-watered sites.

  • Family: Rubiaceae
  • Native region: Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia
  • Mature height: 25-35 m
  • Growth rate: Fast

Sow the very fine seed by surface-sowing onto a moist, well-drained seedbed or tray; mix the tiny seed with fine sand for even spread and do not bury it, as it needs light to germinate. Keep the surface consistently moist and shaded; germination takes about 14-21 days. Prick out and transplant the delicate seedlings into bags once they reach 8-10 cm, and plant out at the start of the rains.
