Chinese Juniper (Juniperus chinensis) is a versatile evergreen conifer grown for its dense, aromatic foliage and adaptable form, which ranges from upright columns to spreading shrubs depending on the variety. The foliage is a mix of needle-like juvenile leaves and soft scale-like adult leaves, often blue-green to deep green, sometimes bearing small bluish berry-like cones. Tough and tolerant of heat, drought, pruning and pollution, it is widely used for hedges, screens, topiary, rockeries and bonsai. Native to East Asia, it grows well in Indian hills and plains given full sun and good drainage, offering reliable year-round structure.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Juniper?
Water moderately, letting the soil dry slightly between waterings. Established plants are drought-tolerant; avoid soggy soil, which causes root rot.
How much sunlight does Juniper need?
Junipers need full sun, at least 6 hours of direct light daily, to stay dense and healthy. They become sparse in shade.
Is Juniper safe for pets?
Juniper foliage and berries are mildly toxic if eaten, so keep pets from chewing the plant.
Can Juniper be grown in a pot?
Yes, it grows well in pots and is a classic bonsai subject. Use a free-draining mix and repot every 2-3 years.
How is Juniper propagated?
It is propagated from semi-hardwood cuttings and by grafting for named varieties. Cuttings root slowly but reliably.
What common problems affect Juniper?
Spider mites, juniper scale and bagworms are the main pests, and overwatering causes root rot. Ensure good drainage and airflow.
Does Juniper flower?
As a conifer it does not bloom; instead it may bear small bluish berry-like cones on female plants. It is grown for its foliage.
Is Juniper an indoor or outdoor plant?
It is an outdoor plant needing full sun and fresh air. Indoor junipers decline; bonsai should live outdoors with only brief display indoors.
Is any part of the plant poisonous?
The foliage and berries are mildly toxic if ingested, so keep them away from children and pets.
What fertilizer is best for Juniper?
A light application of balanced or conifer fertilizer in spring is enough. Avoid overfeeding, which causes weak, leggy growth.
