Jacaranda or Neel Mohar (Jacaranda mimosifolia) is a medium-sized, semi-deciduous flowering tree famed for its spectacular spring display of trumpet-shaped, lavender-blue blossoms over delicate, fern-like foliage. Few ornamental trees create such a striking show, with carpets of fallen blue flowers beneath the canopy.

Native to north-western Argentina and Bolivia, it is widely planted as an avenue and garden tree in the cooler hill stations and milder cities of India, such as Bengaluru, the Nilgiris and the lower Himalaya, where it flowers most freely. It prefers well-drained soil and full sun, casts light shade, and its nectar-rich flowers attract bees and butterflies, while its light wood has minor utility uses.

  • Family: Bignoniaceae
  • Native region: NW Argentina & Bolivia
  • Mature height: 10–15 m
  • Growth rate: fast

The flat, papery, winged seeds need little treatment but benefit from a brief soak in water for a few hours before sowing thinly in trays of well-drained mix, barely covered with fine soil. Kept warm (22–28 °C) and lightly moist, they germinate readily in about 14–21 days. Prick the seedlings into pots once a couple of true leaves form and grow on in full light, hardening off before planting out.
