Ixora coccinea is a hardy evergreen shrub treasured across India for its rounded clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in fiery red, orange, pink or yellow. The glossy leathery foliage stays attractive year-round, while blooms appear almost continuously in warm weather. Compact and easy to shape, it suits hedges, borders, foundation plantings and large containers. Thriving in full sun and tropical heat, Ixora rewards consistent watering and slightly acidic soil with non-stop colour. Flowers attract butterflies and sunbirds, and the plant tolerates coastal conditions. A dependable low-maintenance choice for sunny Indian gardens, balconies and temple landscapes alike.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water my Ixora?
Keep the soil evenly moist, watering when the top 2-3 cm feels dry. In summer this may mean daily watering for pots; avoid waterlogging.
How much sunlight does Ixora need?
It flowers best in full sun with at least 5-6 hours of direct light. In low light it grows leggy and produces few blooms.
Is Ixora safe for pets?
Ixora is generally considered non-toxic and low-risk for cats and dogs, but it is ornamental only and should not be eaten by pets or people.
When and how do I repot Ixora?
Repot every two years or when roots fill the pot, ideally before the growing season, using fresh well-drained, slightly acidic potting mix.
How do I propagate Ixora?
Take 10-15 cm semi-hardwood stem cuttings in the warm season, dip in rooting hormone, and root in moist sandy mix with warmth and humidity.
Why are my Ixora leaves turning yellow?
Yellowing usually signals alkaline soil or iron chlorosis. Use an acidic fertiliser, add iron supplements, and avoid hard water or limey soils.
Why is my Ixora not blooming?
Too little sun, over-pruning, or high-nitrogen feed cause poor flowering. Give full sun and a phosphorus-rich, acid-loving fertiliser.
Can Ixora be grown indoors?
It prefers outdoor sun. Indoors it needs a very bright window or grow light and will flower poorly without strong direct light.
Is Ixora toxic if touched or eaten?
It is not known to be significantly toxic, but it is not edible. Keep flowers and foliage out of reach of small children as a precaution.
What fertiliser is best for Ixora?
Feed monthly during active growth with an acid-loving or balanced flowering plant fertiliser, supplemented with micronutrients like iron and magnesium.
