Uses

The seed husk (psyllium) is the well-known natural fibre laxative used to ease constipation and support digestion and gut health. The whole seed is also valued in traditional Ayurvedic remedies.

Growing tips

Sow the tiny seeds very shallowly, barely covering them, and keep the surface lightly moist until sprouting. Germination takes 7-14 days in cool, dry weather. Best direct sown in beds, thinning seedlings to 10-15 cm apart. Water sparingly. The crop matures in about 110-130 days when the spikes turn brown and seed is ready to harvest.
