Indian bay leaf, or tejpatta, is an evergreen tree native to the Himalayan foothills, grown for its aromatic, three-veined leaves used as a warm cooking spice. It develops a dense, leathery canopy of glossy green leaves that carry a clove-cinnamon fragrance, distinct from the Mediterranean bay. Slow to moderate growing, it suits gardens and large containers in warm, humid regions and tolerates light shade when young. The dried leaves flavour biryanis, curries and garam masala blends. The bark is also aromatic. A long-lived, low-maintenance tree, it rewards patient growers with years of fresh, fragrant harvests.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Indian bay leaf?
Water moderately when the topsoil dries; established trees are fairly drought tolerant but young plants need steadier moisture.
How much light does tejpatta need?
It grows best in full sun to partial shade; young plants appreciate some shade before establishing.
Is Indian bay leaf safe for pets?
The culinary leaf is generally safe, but whole leaves are tough and best kept away from pets to avoid choking.
How often should I repot a potted bay tree?
Repot container plants every two to three years into a larger pot with fresh, well-drained soil.
How do I propagate tejpatta?
Propagate from seed or semi-hardwood cuttings, though cuttings root slowly and need warmth and humidity.
Why are my bay leaves spotting?
Leaf spot usually follows wet, crowded conditions; improve airflow, avoid wetting foliage and remove affected leaves.
When does tejpatta flower?
Mature trees bear small pale flowers in spring, but it is grown for its leaves, not blooms.
Can I grow Indian bay leaf indoors?
Young plants can grow in bright containers, but it ultimately becomes a tree best suited to gardens or large pots outdoors.
Is the leaf toxic to humans?
The leaf is edible as a flavouring but is removed before eating because it stays stiff and can hurt if swallowed.
What fertilizer suits tejpatta?
Apply compost yearly and a balanced fertilizer in spring to support steady, healthy foliage growth.
