Uses

A showy ornamental for tall borders, backdrops against walls and fences, and cut-flower spikes. The nectar-rich blooms attract bees and butterflies, and the edible flowers are sometimes used as a garnish.

Growing tips

Sow seeds about 0.5 cm deep, lightly covered, spacing plants 45-60 cm apart. Germination takes 10-14 days at 18-24 C. Start in trays and transplant when seedlings have a few true leaves, or direct sow into deep beds. Stake the tall stems against wind. Expect flowering in the next cool season, roughly 4-5 months after sowing.
