Soleirolia soleirolii, popularly sold as Baby's Tears or Mind-Your-Own-Business, is a low, mat-forming perennial in the nettle family. Its threadlike stems are studded with thousands of tiny, bright-green rounded leaves that knit together into a soft, moss-like cushion just 5-10 cm tall.
In Indian conditions it thrives best in bright shade and high humidity, making it a favourite filler for terrariums, fairy gardens, hanging baskets and the bare soil under larger potted plants. It also forms a charming green carpet in cool, moist gardens in hill stations and during the monsoon.
Easy to grow but thirsty, it spreads quickly and is simple to propagate from small divisions, letting you fill containers or shaded beds in a single season.

Growing tips

In most Indian plains, grow it indoors or on shaded balconies where it escapes direct afternoon sun and dry heat.

The monsoon and the cool months (roughly October to February) are its happiest season, with naturally high humidity and mild temperatures. During the hot, dry pre-monsoon months, move pots to the coolest, most humid spot, mist often or keep them in a covered terrarium, and never let the soil dry out. In hill stations it can be grown outdoors as a ground carpet year-round.
