Soleirolia soleirolii, popularly sold as Baby's Tears or Mind-Your-Own-Business, is a low, mat-forming perennial in the nettle family. Its threadlike stems are studded with thousands of tiny, bright-green rounded leaves that knit together into a soft, moss-like cushion just 5-10 cm tall.

In Indian conditions it thrives best in bright shade and high humidity, making it a favourite filler for terrariums, fairy gardens, hanging baskets and the bare soil under larger potted plants. It also forms a charming green carpet in cool, moist gardens in hill stations and during the monsoon.

Easy to grow but thirsty, it spreads quickly and is simple to propagate from small divisions, letting you fill containers or shaded beds in a single season.

Sunlight Bright indirect light to partial shade; avoid harsh direct sun which scorches the delicate leaves.
Watering Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged; water when the surface just begins to dry. Wilts fast if it dries out.
Soil / mix Light, rich, well-draining potting mix with good moisture retention; add peat or coco-peat and compost.
Temperature Prefers 15-25 C; struggles above 30 C and in dry heat. Protect from frost.
Humidity High humidity (60%+); ideal for terrariums. Mist regularly or use a pebble tray in dry Indian summers.
Fertilizer Feed a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month during active growth.
Pruning Trim or shear back regularly to keep the cushion dense and within bounds; pinch stray runners.
Repotting Repot or divide every 1-2 years in spring when the mat becomes crowded or pot-bound.
Propagation Very easy from division; lift small clumps with roots and replant, or press stem pieces onto moist soil.
Pests & problems Generally trouble-free; watch for aphids, whitefly and fungus gnats in soggy soil. Avoid overwatering to prevent rot.
Toxicity / safety Considered non-toxic to humans, cats and dogs.

Uses

Soleirolia soleirolii is grown almost entirely for its lush ornamental foliage:

Living green carpet for terrariums, bottle gardens and fairy gardens

Soft groundcover or filler under larger potted plants and bonsai

Trailing accent in hanging baskets and tabletop pots

Moist, shaded edging and rockery cover in cool gardens and hill stations

Growing tips

In most Indian plains, grow it indoors or on shaded balconies where it escapes direct afternoon sun and dry heat.

The monsoon and the cool months (roughly October to February) are its happiest season, with naturally high humidity and mild temperatures. During the hot, dry pre-monsoon months, move pots to the coolest, most humid spot, mist often or keep them in a covered terrarium, and never let the soil dry out. In hill stations it can be grown outdoors as a ground carpet year-round.

Frequently asked questions

Can I grow Baby's Tears indoors in India?
Yes. It does very well indoors near a bright window with indirect light, or in a closed terrarium. Indoors it is easier to give it the cool, humid, shaded conditions it prefers and to keep it away from harsh direct sun.
Why are my Baby's Tears turning brown or crispy?
This is almost always from low humidity, direct sun, or the soil drying out. Move it to bright shade, mist regularly or use a pebble tray, and keep the soil evenly moist. Trim away the dead patches and it will quickly fill back in.
Is Soleirolia soleirolii safe around pets and children?
It is generally regarded as non-toxic to cats, dogs and humans, making it a safe choice for homes with curious pets or children. As with any plant, discourage deliberate eating of the foliage.
