Heliconia psittacorum 'Golden Torch' is a vigorous, clumping tropical perennial belonging to the heliconia family. It produces erect stems topped with striking torch-like inflorescences of bright golden-yellow to orange bracts that rise above paddle-shaped, glossy green leaves resembling those of a small banana or ginger plant.

Spreading steadily by underground rhizomes, it forms dense colonies and flowers almost year-round in warm, frost-free conditions. In India it thrives outdoors in coastal, southern and eastern regions and other warm, humid zones, making a bold statement in tropical borders, mass plantings and along water features.

The long-lasting, sturdy blooms are popular as cut flowers, and the plant's quick growth and easy care make it a favourite for landscapers and home gardeners seeking a low-maintenance tropical accent.

Frequently asked questions

Does Heliconia 'Golden Torch' grow well across India?
It thrives outdoors year-round in warm, humid regions such as coastal, southern and eastern India. In North India it needs protection from winter cold and frost, so grow it in a sheltered spot or in containers that can be moved under cover.
How much sunlight and water does it need?
Give it full sun to partial shade, with light afternoon shade in very hot areas. Keep the soil consistently moist with regular watering, especially in summer, but ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogged roots.
