Hardwickia (Hardwickia pinnata, now often placed as Kingiodendron pinnatum) is a tall, handsome leguminous evergreen of the Western Ghats, valued as a source of a fragrant oleoresin and durable, heavy timber. It develops a straight bole and a spreading crown of pinnate leaves and is regarded as a near-threatened endemic of value.
It grows in the moist deciduous and evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra, on hill slopes and along streams. The trunk yields an aromatic copaiba-like oleoresin used medicinally and as a wood preservative and illuminant, while the strong timber is used in construction; the tree is also planted in restoration and agroforestry of the Ghats.
- Family: Fabaceae
- Native region: Western Ghats, India (endemic)
- Mature height: 25–40 m
- Growth rate: moderate
Extract the flat pod seeds and soak them in water for 24 hours to soften the coat before sowing about 2 cm deep in polybags of well-drained forest soil. Kept warm and moist in light shade, fresh seed germinates over roughly 14–21 days, though viability falls quickly so sow promptly. Grow the seedlings on through one season in the nursery and harden off before field planting at the start of the rains.
