Golden Trumpet (Allamanda cathartica) is a robust evergreen climbing shrub celebrated for its large, glossy, golden-yellow trumpet-shaped flowers that appear through much of the year in warm climates. Native to tropical America, it bears whorls of leathery deep-green leaves and can be trained over fences, arches, pergolas and trellises, or kept pruned as a shrub. It thrives in heat and sun, flowering best in India's monsoon and summer months. Fast-growing and showy, it makes a dazzling display but its milky sap is toxic and can irritate skin, so handle and site it with care.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Allamanda?
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season, especially in summer. Reduce watering in cooler months and avoid waterlogging.
How much sunlight does it need?
It needs full sun for the best flowering. In too much shade it produces lush leaves but few flowers.
Is Golden Trumpet safe for pets?
No. The plant is toxic if eaten and its milky sap can irritate skin and eyes, so keep pets and children away and wear gloves when pruning.
When should I repot it?
Repot every one to two years in spring when roots fill the container, using rich, well-drained potting soil and a larger pot.
How do I propagate it?
Take semi-hardwood cuttings in the warm season, dip in rooting hormone and keep them warm and moist until they root.
Why is my Allamanda not flowering?
Insufficient sunlight, cold weather or excess nitrogen reduce blooms. Give it full sun, feed a balanced fertiliser and prune to encourage new flowering shoots.
When does it bloom?
It flowers mainly through the warm season, from summer into autumn, blooming heavily during the Indian monsoon and summer months.
Can I grow it indoors?
It is best grown outdoors in full sun. Indoors it rarely gets enough light to flower well, though it can be kept in a very bright spot.
How do I train it as a climber?
Tie the long shoots to a trellis, arch or fence as they grow. It is not a true twiner, so it needs support and occasional tying in.
What fertiliser should I use?
Feed a balanced NPK fertiliser monthly during the growing season, with extra potassium to encourage abundant golden flowers.
