Uses

The flat leaves add a gentle garlic note to stir-fries, dumplings, omelettes, soups and Indo-Chinese dishes, and the white flowers are edible too. As a clumping perennial it also makes a tidy, aromatic edging plant.

Growing tips

Sow seeds about 1 cm deep, either direct or in trays, and keep warm and moist as germination is slow at 14-21 days. Transplant or thin clumps to 15-20 cm apart. Begin snipping leaves once clumps are well established at around 80-90 days, cutting 3-4 cm above the base so they regrow for many seasons.

Frequently asked questions

When should I sow garlic chives in India?
Sow in spring (February-March) or after the monsoon in September-October when temperatures are mild. As a perennial, an established clump then keeps growing through most of the year.
Will garlic chives grow back after cutting?
Yes. Garlic chives are a cut-and-come-again perennial. Snip the leaves a few centimetres above the soil and the clump regrows repeatedly for several years with light feeding.
