Galphimia glauca, the gold shower or thryallis, is a compact evergreen shrub that produces airy terminal sprays of small, bright golden-yellow star-shaped flowers over a very long season above fine blue-green foliage. Native to Mexico and Central America, it adapts readily to warm Indian gardens, where it flowers almost continuously with little care. Its tidy, rounded habit suits low hedges, mass plantings, borders and containers, and the cheerful blooms attract bees and butterflies. Heat-tolerant and undemanding once established, it is a dependable choice for sustained golden colour in sunny landscapes.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Galphimia?
Water moderately while establishing; once settled it is drought tolerant and needs watering only in extended dry spells.
How much sun does it need?
It flowers most heavily in full sun, though it tolerates light shade with somewhat reduced bloom.
Is Gold Shower safe for pets?
No major toxicity has been reported, but it is still sensible to keep pets from eating the leaves and flowers.
How do I propagate it?
Take semi-hardwood cuttings in the warm season or sow seed; cuttings root reliably in a well-drained moist mix.
When does it bloom?
In warm Indian climates it blooms through most of the year, peaking in the warm season with full sun and light feeding.
Can it be grown in a pot?
Yes, its compact habit suits containers; give it sun, good drainage and a light trim to keep it neat and flowering.
How do I keep it dense?
Give it a light trim now and then to maintain the rounded shape and encourage fresh flowering shoots.
Can it be used as a hedge?
Yes, its tidy habit and long bloom make it excellent for low flowering hedges and mass plantings.
What pests affect it?
It is generally pest-resistant; problems are uncommon, but neem oil handles any occasional sap-sucking insects.
Does it tolerate frost?
It is tender to hard frost. In cold north Indian winters protect it; mild tip damage will regrow in spring.
