Uses

Foxglove is grown purely as an ornamental, adding vertical drama to borders, woodland corners and cut-flower arrangements. Its nectar-rich bells are a magnet for bees. Note: all parts are toxic if eaten, so keep away from children and pets.

Growing tips

Foxglove seed is tiny and needs light to sprout, so surface sow and press in gently without covering. Start in trays and keep moist; germination takes 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings 30-45 cm apart once they have 4-5 true leaves. Sown in autumn, plants form a rosette over winter and send up flower spikes the following spring; bloom comes about 5-6 months from sowing.
