Kalanchoe luciae, called Flapjack or Paddle Plant, is a dramatic succulent with large, flat, rounded leaves stacked in a clamshell rosette. In bright sun the leaf edges and tips flush vivid red and coral, giving it striking colour, while shade keeps it grey-green. Native to southern Africa, it stores water in its thick paddles and tolerates drought well. After a few years a mature rosette may send up a tall flowering spike, then naturally dies after producing offsets. Eye-catching in pots, beds and rockeries, it makes a bold focal point on sunny balconies and in low-water Indian gardens.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Flapjack?
Only when the soil dries out, about every 10-14 days in summer and far less in monsoon and winter. Overwatering is the main cause of failure.
How do I get the red leaf colour?
Give it plenty of bright, direct sun; the more light and the cooler the nights, the deeper the red edges. Shade keeps it plain green.
Is Flapjack safe for pets?
No, it is toxic to cats and dogs if eaten, like other Kalanchoes. Keep it out of their reach.
Why did my plant grow a tall stalk and start dying?
That is its natural flowering: a mature rosette blooms once, then declines, but it leaves behind offsets you can grow on.
How do I propagate it?
Separate the offsets at the base or take leaf and stem cuttings, let them callus, then root in gritty, well-draining mix.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, but only in a very bright, sunny window; with too little light it stretches and loses its red colour.
Why are the lower leaves dropping?
A few old lower leaves dropping is normal, but widespread soft, mushy leaves indicate overwatering or rot. Let it dry out more.
Can it grow outdoors in India?
Yes, it thrives outdoors in sunny, frost-free gardens and balconies; just shelter it from heavy monsoon rain.
Is it toxic to humans?
It can cause stomach irritation if ingested and should be kept away from young children; treat it as a non-edible ornamental.
What fertilizer should I use?
A light dose of diluted succulent fertilizer once or twice during the growing season is sufficient; avoid feeding in winter.
