Frequently asked questions

How often should I water Crossandra?
Keep the soil consistently moist, watering when the surface starts to dry. It dislikes drying out fully but also will not tolerate waterlogging.
How much sunlight does it need?
It prefers bright, filtered light or partial shade. Harsh midday sun can scorch it, while too much shade reduces flowering.
Is Firecracker Flower safe for pets?
Yes, it is non-toxic and is even used in hair garlands and worship, making it safe around pets and children.
When should I repot it?
Repot yearly or when root-bound, in spring, using rich, well-drained potting soil and a slightly larger container.
How do I propagate it?
Propagate from stem cuttings in the warm season or from seed. Keep cuttings warm, humid and shaded until roots develop.
Why is my Aboli not flowering?
Low humidity, insufficient light or lack of feeding reduce blooms. Provide bright filtered light, steady moisture, humidity and regular fertiliser.
When does it bloom?
It flowers through the warm and humid months, blooming almost continuously in tropical Indian climates with good care.
Can I grow it in a pot?
Yes. Its compact size makes it excellent for balcony pots and shaded container gardens, where it stays neat and floriferous.
Why are leaves curling or dropping?
This often signals low humidity, dry soil or spider mites. Raise humidity, keep soil moist and check the undersides of leaves for pests.
What fertiliser should I use?
Feed a balanced flowering fertiliser every two to three weeks in the growing season to sustain its long flush of orange blooms.
