Tiger Bark Ficus (Ficus retusa) is a dense, evergreen fig with a smooth, pale, mottled bark and small, glossy, leathery leaves, famous as a vigorous landscape shade tree and one of the most popular subjects for bonsai. It develops a stout trunk and twisting surface roots that give mature specimens great character.

Native to tropical and subtropical Asia, it is widely planted across warmer Indian cities for avenues, parks, clipped hedges and topiary, tolerating pruning, pollution and a range of soils. It casts heavy shade, helps purify the air, and its tiny figs feed birds, making it a dependable urban and ornamental tree.

  • Family: Moraceae
  • Native region: tropical & subtropical Asia
  • Mature height: 10–20 m (kept small in bonsai/hedging)
  • Growth rate: fast

The seed is minute and best sown fresh; surface-sow it on a moist, well-drained, sterile mix and do not bury it, as light is needed for germination. Keep warm (25–30 °C) and humid under bright, indirect light, misting to maintain a damp surface; germination is uneven over roughly 21–30 days. Transplant seedlings into small pots when sturdy enough and grow on in warm, lightly shaded conditions.
