Ficus Bonsai (Ficus retusa, often sold as Ficus microcarpa or 'Ginseng ficus') is among the toughest and most popular indoor bonsai. It has thick, glossy oval leaves, a smooth pale trunk and a striking ability to form aerial and buttressed roots. Native to tropical Asia, it thrives in the warm, humid conditions found across much of India and tolerates lower light better than most bonsai. Vigorous and forgiving, it heals wounds fast, back-buds readily and suits banyan, root-over-rock and informal styles. Its resilience and dramatic root and trunk character make it a favourite for both beginners and display collections.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I water a Ficus bonsai?
Water when the topsoil feels dry, keeping it lightly moist - typically every 1-2 days in summer. It tolerates brief dryness but not constant sogginess.
How much light does it need?
Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates moderate light better than most bonsai. A little direct sun deepens leaf colour.
Is Ficus bonsai safe for pets?
It is mildly toxic - the milky latex can irritate skin and upset pets if chewed, so keep it out of reach of cats and dogs.
When should I repot a Ficus bonsai?
Repot every two years in spring or summer, root-pruning and refreshing the well-draining soil while the tree is in active growth.
How do I propagate it?
Very easily - take cuttings in the warm season or air-layer a branch; both root readily in humid warmth.
Why are leaves yellowing or dropping?
Common causes are overwatering, sudden light changes or cold drafts. Stabilise watering and warmth and it recovers fast.
How do I encourage aerial roots?
Maintain high humidity by misting or using a humidity tray and keep the tree warm; aerial roots form best in moist, warm air.
Can it be grown indoors permanently?
Yes, Ficus retusa is one of the best true indoor bonsai, needing only a bright spot and warmth.
Is the white sap dangerous?
The latex can irritate skin and is harmful if swallowed, so wash hands after pruning and keep it away from children and pets.
What fertilizer should I use?
Feed a balanced bonsai or liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during active growth, reducing in winter.
