Ficus Bonsai (Ficus retusa, often sold as Ficus microcarpa or 'Ginseng ficus') is among the toughest and most popular indoor bonsai. It has thick, glossy oval leaves, a smooth pale trunk and a striking ability to form aerial and buttressed roots. Native to tropical Asia, it thrives in the warm, humid conditions found across much of India and tolerates lower light better than most bonsai. Vigorous and forgiving, it heals wounds fast, back-buds readily and suits banyan, root-over-rock and informal styles. Its resilience and dramatic root and trunk character make it a favourite for both beginners and display collections.
