The Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina) is a graceful evergreen fig with a dense, rounded crown of glossy leaves on slender, gently drooping branches, equally at home as a large landscape tree or a clipped indoor specimen. It is one of the most popular ornamental and air-purifying foliage plants in the world.

Native to South and South-East Asia and northern Australia, it is widely planted across warmer Indian cities for avenues, screens, hedges and topiary, and grown indoors elsewhere. It thrives in warm, humid conditions on well-drained soil, casts excellent shade, and its small figs attract birds while the foliage helps clean indoor air.

  • Family: Moraceae
  • Native region: South & South-East Asia, N. Australia
  • Mature height: 10–20 m (much less when pruned/potted)
  • Growth rate: fast

Seeds are tiny and best fresh; surface-sow them on a moist, well-drained, sterile mix and leave them uncovered as light aids germination. Maintain steady warmth (25–30 °C) and high humidity under bright, indirect light, misting to keep the surface damp; germination is uneven over roughly 21–30 days. Move seedlings into small pots when large enough to handle and grow on in warm, partly shaded conditions.
