Uses

The tender leaves (methi) are cooked as a green in sabzis, parathas, dals and theplas, while the seeds are a key tempering and masala spice with digestive uses. Sprouted methi is eaten in salads, and the herb is widely valued in Indian home remedies.

Growing tips

Direct sow seeds thickly, 5-10 mm deep, broadcast over a shallow pot, tray or bed. Germination is quick at about 3-7 days. No transplanting needed — thin lightly if crowded. Harvest tender greens by cutting at 3-4 cm above soil from 25-35 days; plants may regrow for a second cut, or leave them to flower and pod for seeds.
